How many teams make the NFL playoffs?
There are 14 playoff teams in total — seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC. Each conference sends four division winners and three wild card teams. Division winners take the top four seeds. The number one seed in each conference gets a first-round bye.
What is the difference between division winners and wild card teams?
Division winners finish first in their divisions. The NFL has eight divisions overall, four in each conference. Wild card teams have strong records but didn’t win their divisions. The three best remaining teams in each conference earn wild card spots and get seeds five through seven.
