Two clubs effectively traded coaching staffs in January. The New York Giants hired John Harbaugh, let Brian Daboll go to Tennessee, and then brought in the man Tennessee had just dismissed. It is the kind of circuit that only happens when several teams decide to start again in the same month.

Harbaugh Arrives, and So Does Tennessee’s Old Coach

John Harbaugh was appointed on January 20 as the twenty first head coach in Giants history. He arrives with a Super Bowl ring from his time in Baltimore, twelve postseason appearances and six division titles, and he inherits a club that has just gone 4-13 and finished bottom of the NFC East.

Matt Nagy calls the offense, Dennard Wilson runs the defense and Chris Horton takes special teams while also serving as assistant head coach. Brian Callahan, head coach in Tennessee until partway through last season, joins as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Callahan’s brief is Jaxson Dart, who enters his second season with Jameis Winston behind him. Three losing years in a row is the record this staff was hired to end.

Week 18 is the only undated line. The league fills that in once Week 17 has been played, and flexible scheduling can move a Sunday afternoon game into a night slot before then.

Nine Home Games and a Prime Time Start

The Giants are one of the clubs drawn with nine home fixtures rather than eight this year, and none of them is given away to an overseas venue. All nine are at MetLife Stadium, which is a straightforward advantage over the eight the rest of the division mostly gets.

The season also opens in the brightest possible windows. Week 1 is Sunday night against Dallas and Week 2 is Monday night in Los Angeles, so the new coaching staff is introduced on national television twice before anyone has seen them on a normal afternoon.

Four games sit outside the Sunday afternoon pattern in total, the two openers plus a Thursday against Washington in Week 10 and a Monday night in Detroit after Christmas. There is no Thanksgiving fixture, no Christmas game and no international trip. Live positions are on the NFL standings page.

MetLife Stadium and the Division Bookends

Home is MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, an open air ground seating 82,500 that the Giants share with the Jets. It is one of only two stadiums in the league used by two clubs, so the pitch takes a full season of wear from two teams rather than one.

The division frames the year at both ends. Dallas opens it under the lights in New Jersey and hosts the Giants in Week 17, while Philadelphia is played at home in Week 18 after the away meeting in Week 9. Washington comes twice inside five weeks in October and November.
