How to Read the Standings Table
| Column | What it means |
|---|---|
| W / L / T | Wins, losses and ties. Ties are rare but they count as half a win and half a loss in win percentage. |
| PCT | Win percentage. This is the number the NFL ranks teams by, not raw wins. |
| PF / PA | Points scored and points allowed. |
| NET PTS | Point differential. A strong positive number often signals a genuine contender. |
| Home / Road | Record split by venue. |
| Div / Conf | Record inside the division and inside the conference. These two drive most tiebreakers. |
| Streak | Current run of consecutive wins or losses. |
| Last 5 | Form over the five most recent games. |
If two teams share a record, look at their division and conference columns first. That is usually where the tiebreaker is already decided.
How the NFL Standings 2026 Work
The league splits 32 teams into two conferences of 16, each with four divisions of four. Teams are ranked by win percentage, not by wins alone, which matters in any season with a tie.
- Eight division winners qualify automatically, one from each division, whatever their record.
- Six wild cards fill the field, the three best remaining records in each conference.
- Fourteen teams reach the postseason, seven per conference.
- One bye goes to the top seed in each conference, and nobody else.
A losing record can still win a division. In the 2025 season the Panthers, Buccaneers and Falcons all finished 8-9 in the NFC South. Carolina won the division on tiebreakers, took the 4 seed and hosted a wild card game, then lost 34 to 31 to the 12-5 Rams. Division standing outranks overall record every time.
NFL Tiebreakers in Order
When two teams finish level, the NFL applies a fixed sequence and stops at the first step that separates them. The order differs depending on what is being decided.
Division tie between two clubs:
- Head to head record
- Record in division games
- Record in common games
- Record in conference games
- Strength of victory
- Strength of schedule
Wild card tie between two clubs:
- Head to head record, if they played
- Record in conference games
- Record in common games, minimum four
- Strength of victory
- Strength of schedule
Two details catch people out. When three or more clubs are tied for a wild card, the NFL first applies the division tiebreaker so only the highest ranked club from each division stays in. And at that stage head to head counts only as a sweep, meaning one club must have beaten every other club or lost to every other club.
Conference Seeding Explained
Seeds 1 through 4 go to the four division winners, ordered by record. Seeds 5, 6 and 7 go to the wild cards. This is unchanged for 2026. The proposal to seed all seven teams strictly by record was pulled before the May 2025 owners vote and was not resubmitted, and the April 2026 Annual League Meeting passed only special teams and replay changes.
| Seed | How you get it | Wild Card weekend |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Best division winner record | Bye, then hosts the lowest surviving seed |
| 2 | Second best division winner | Hosts the 7 seed |
| 3 | Third best division winner | Hosts the 6 seed |
| 4 | Fourth division winner | Hosts the 5 seed |
| 5, 6, 7 | Three best non division winners | All three play on the road |
The first round bye is the single biggest prize in the standings. It buys a week of rest and guarantees home field until the Super Bowl. Follow how the race is trending on the NFL playoff picture and test scenarios with the playoff predictor.
NFL Standings 2026 FAQs
When does the 2026 NFL season start?
The 2026 regular season kicks off Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with the New England Patriots at the Seattle Seahawks. The first full Sunday slate is September 13. Until then, all 32 teams sit at 0-0.
How often do the NFL standings update?
After every completed game. The table on this page pulls fresh records as soon as a final score is confirmed, so Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday results all show up the same night.
How are NFL teams ranked in the standings?
By win percentage, not by total wins. A tie counts as half a win and half a loss. Teams level on percentage are separated by tiebreakers, starting with head to head results.
What is the first NFL tiebreaker?
Head to head record between the tied clubs. If that does not settle it, division record comes next for a division tie, or conference record for a wild card tie.
How many teams make the NFL playoffs in 2026?
Fourteen. Four division winners and three wild cards from each conference. Only the number one seed in each conference gets a first round bye.
Can a team with a losing record make the playoffs?
Yes. Division winners qualify no matter their record. In 2025 the Panthers, Buccaneers and Falcons all finished 8-9 in the NFC South. Carolina won on tiebreakers, took the 4 seed and hosted a wild card game.
When does the 2026 NFL regular season end?
Week 18 runs Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 2027, with three games on the Saturday and 13 on the Sunday. All 16 are division matchups, which is why so many seeds are decided on the final day.
When is Super Bowl LXI?
Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Wild Card weekend is January 16 to 18, the Divisional Round is January 23 to 24 and the Conference Championships are January 31.
Bookmark this page and check the NFL Standings 2026 table after each slate of games. From the September 9 opener to the final division weekend in January, this is where the league table, the conference order and every division race stay current.
