Jared Goff's Fourth Coordinator

Drew Petzing calls the plays in Detroit now, the fourth offensive coordinator Goff has worked with since arriving in 2021. That churn has not slowed him down. Last season he threw for 4,564 yards and 34 touchdowns, second in the league in both, with a 105.5 rating and 68 percent completions, and the Lions ranked fourth in scoring, fifth in total offense and third in passing.

The weapons are intact: Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta and Isaac TeSlaa. The line is the question. Center Cade Mays is out for a while with a wrist injury and Juice Scruggs has been rehabbing, which pushed Seth McLaughlin into first team reps, and Dan Campbell has left right tackle as an open competition.

New York Bought Veterans on Defense

Aaron Glenn is in year two, and the roster he inherited has been rebuilt around experience. Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick arrived to steady a defense that gave up too much last season, and Geno Smith came in from Las Vegas to run an offense that needed a professional.

Glenn has been blunt that the Jets are installing two new systems at once, which is why he played his starters early in the preseason rather than protecting them. Smith rewarded him with one of his best camp days, eleven for eleven with four touchdowns in team drills, and has spent August talking about pushing the ball down the field.

Detroit's problem was not points. A top five offense and a 9-8 record is a defensive story, which is what makes Jets vs Lions an odd pairing of strengths.

Geno Smith has been durable. He started 64 of a possible 68 games across his last three Seattle seasons and last year in Las Vegas.

Garrett Wilson and Braelon Allen showed up. Both had strong camp days, Allen with three touchdowns in one red zone session.

Ford Field sits in downtown Detroit rather than in a ring of parking, which changes the calculation. Lots and decks open about four hours before kickoff and the ones next to the stadium go first come, first served, so arriving late usually means walking further than you planned.

The alternative is the city's own transit.
