"It was about time in camp that we wanted to start layering some periods and work in crowd noise so we can work our silent cadence on offense," Mike Macdonald said afterward. Seattle was rehearsing being at home, which is a strange thing to have to practice until you remember what the visiting team has to do in that building.

DeMarcus Lawrence, back for a thirteenth season after weighing retirement, spent the practice waving his arms at the fans in attendance to get them louder, treating an August rep like a third down in December. "We got the best crowd in America, so if we're out here working, they're out here working too," the outside linebacker said. "That's what '12 as One' is for."

The Chargers Line Has a Brand New Center

Which brings us to the other half of this. Tyler Biadasz, signed to solve the middle of the Los Angeles offensive line, tore an ACL in the third week of August. Jim Harbaugh named the replacement the same week and did not hedge about it.

"Jake Slaughter is now our starting center, so that's a big change," Harbaugh said. "I'm very confident in Jake Slaughter being our starting center." Slaughter had spent most of camp competing at left guard. He now makes the protection calls.

The rest is less settled than Los Angeles would like this close to a trip north. Rashawn Slater is working through a knee issue and has been limited, with Trey Pipkins III sliding out to left tackle when he sits. The left guard job is still open, with Harbaugh saying Kayode Awosika "is right there, he's the leader right now" rather than naming him. Joe Alt and Cole Strange hold down the right side.

Seattle leads the all-time series 27-25, which is about as close as a fifty-two game history gets. The Chargers have taken three of the last five, including a 25-17 win in Seattle in 2018.

The Crowd That Got a Rule Written About It

In 1989 the NFL briefly wrote a rule against excessive crowd noise. Seattle was a large part of the reason. That was the Kingdome era, two buildings ago, and the noise was already considered a competitive problem worth legislating.

The current stadium was built to keep it. The partial roofs cover most of the seating and angle inward, so sound that would escape an open bowl gets reflected back down onto the field instead. The number 12 was retired in Seattle on December 15, 1984, and the 12 Flag has been raised before every home game since twelve original season ticket holders lifted it on October 12, 2003.

The clearest evidence of what that does to a visiting offense came on November 27, 2005, when the New York Giants committed eleven false start penalties and missed three field goals in a Seattle overtime loss.
